Speed Dial with A Piece of Toast

One look at Texan sisters (by way of Missouri) Molly and Sally’s blog, A Piece of Toast, and you know they have great taste. They share a love of refined, clean and pretty things (including a few of my faves: Roberta Roller Rabbit, Mi Golondrina and the beaches of 30a!) but what may surprise you is just how different they actually are. Still, they’re both as charming (Molly describes pizza as her “food husband”) as their site. Below, we chat blogging, buying and [Molly’s dog] Blue!

How has the game changed since you started blogging in 2010?

Molly: Insa-blogging. Content isn’t consumed as much by readers visiting blog sites. People now want to follow bloggers via Instagram

Sally: Twitter is less of a player now…which is strange because it’s the way we first connected with so many blogger friends and readers.

How have you changed?

Molly: I now blog full time, something I never thought I would do!

Sally: I got married and learned that I’m pretty private when it comes to sharing my personal life moments.

Favorite post?

Molly: Any of the ones with Blue (my dog) in them.

Sally: This is so weird but I did a post about natural deodorant years ago and it got a huge response with so many comments – I loved it.

Cringe-worthy post?

Molly: Oh my gosh…there may be too many. Anything with photography prior to mid 2014?

Sally: Anything where we are in video. Cringe x1,000,000.

Best advice you were given by another blogger?

Molly: To hire a CPA.

Sally: Don’t feel like you have to get personal – it’s better to say less and maintain privacy than to share and regret it.

Most challenging part of working with your sister?

Molly: It’s very hard to separate the business relationship from our personal relationship because they are so intertwined.

Sally: We can dish a lot of tough love because there’s an endless amount of conditional love.

Best part of working with your sister?

Molly: Endless trust. And we really do put our relationship as sisters above that of the business.

Sally: Having a partner in crime with a perfectly aligned aesthetic.

How hard was it to do a blog together when you were in separate states?

Molly: When Sally was in San Francisco it was very challenging. I wasn’t able to find a photographer I felt comfortable hiring to shoot her in outfits so she wasn’t represented as much in blog photos as I would have liked.

Sally: I’m back in Texas now and things already feel easier! Being in SF the time change made it hard – I would be finishing posts late at night when Molly was already asleep and then she would wake up early to post them.
