I heart Chicago.
I’ve been several times now over the years and just love that city. Unless it’s the winter. Then I amend my former statement. But Spring, Summer, Fall… I’m there. (These pics were snapped in November.) It has amazing architecture, good eats, clean streets! Coming from New York, the latter is very appreciated.
My favorite place to stay is The Thompson.
It’s intimate, cozy and nestled on the sweetest tree-lined, brownstone-filled side street. Plus, you’re right in the middle of the action. I love a hotel where you can walk to everything. Save on cabs, get natural exercise and, best of all, stumble onto things you normally wouldn’t have.
My must do’s while in town?
For first timers, the architecture boat tour. What a stunning (and fun!) way to see the city and learn more about it’s history and buildings.
Little Goat is a must. Repeat after me: Little Goat is a must.
I can’t say enough good stuff about this place from the decor and design to the atmosphere to the over-the-top, punch someone in the face it’s so good food.
Case in point: This Little Piggy Went to China. Sesame cheddar biscuit, sunny eggs, Szechuan pork sausage in a chili, garlic, chive sauce.
Fat Elvis Waffles. Peanut butter butter (not a typo) and bacon maple syrup. There are no words.
I would’ve gone back for every meal if I could have. No time to dine? Stop in the bakery for sinful sweets to-go like a bacon pig pen bialy or a rosemary white chocolate scone. All the time in the world? Put your name in now for a reservation at Stephanie Izard’s finer dining restaurant Girl and the Goat.
John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Mike Meyers, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler all got their start there. Check out the iconic stage and laugh along with this year’s rising talent.
Oprah’s former chef Art Smith’s southern comfort restaurant. Everything is excellent but the goat cheese buttermilk biscuits are life-changing.
Brunch may be even better than dinner…
Michigan Avenue is absolutely worth a stroll even if you’re not in the mood to shop.
The Aviary.
For a completely unique experience, The Aviary is where it’s at. It’s part lounge, part science lab. Every drink on the menu is like nothing you’ve ever had before and each comes with it’s own out-there presentation. I suggest going with a group and sampling them all.

Next to the world’s largest Polo store, RL is Ralph Lauren’s first restaurant and worthy of a visit. It feels like a luxe members only club and the food is as on point as the decor. On a cold or rainy day, not much beats their grilled cheese and tomato soup.
Rick Bayless‘ XOCO serves Mexican street food to-go including his decadent and delicious churros and hot chocolate. They’re so incredible, I’d stop there in 40 or 80 degree weather.
You can’t go to Chicago and not get a deep dish.
For a more mainstream experience, hit up one of the many Lou Malnati’s.
For more of a local joint, check out Pequod’s. No frills but so damn good.
